2008 BEIJING OLYMPICS:

HOST: china

Along with the criticism regarding the problems of air pollution that had the host city, accusations of human rights violations that has received the Chinese regime an important part of the international community led to several protests, which even affected the course of the
Olympic torch. On the other hand, another important part of the international community called political problems do not mix with sport. The Chinese government for its part, denounced the political-ideological intent of some Western countries and organizations when addressing the issue of human rights, arguing that in fact seek to attack the communist system that is guided by the People's Republic China.Finalmente and although some officials had announced a boycott, it did not occur, even attending the delegation of China Taipei, representative of the Republic of China, an organization not recognized by the People's Republic of China.

The Chinese government established by the Organizing Committee a total of 31 venues and sports facilities for the conduct of the Games in the city of Beijing.
Of these, 12 new facilities were constructed entirely between the protruding the National Stadium and National Aquatics Center. The National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest was designed by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron and is one of the largest steel structure in the world. A total of 11 existing facilities were renewed and conditioned for the Olympics. In addition, temporary facilities were built 9, at the end of the Games were modified or even withdrawn. Among these, there is the street circuit for the marathon and walking tests, and a circuit in both the city and the suburbs for road cycling competitions.
In the other host cities are remodeled 4 stadiums for football competitions in Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Shenyang and Tianjin. In addition, improved Equestrian Centre in Hong Kong and Qingdao port outfitted for sailing regattas. The Guangdong Olympic Stadium in the city of Guangzhou (Canton), was opened in 2001 as part of the candidacy of Beijing 2008, but was finally rejected as host. The selection of Hong Kong as the venue, due to worries about the existing sanitary measures in mainland China, represents the second time in history where equestrian events are conducted in the territory of a different national Olympic committee official organizer: previously occurred during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, equestrian disciplines that took place in Stockholm, Sweden. This happens because, due to the particular duties Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is allowed to have its own Olympic committee, despite being part of the People's Republic of China.
The budget for these projects was originally estimated at about 13 billion yuan (approximately USD 1,880 million), although later studies claim that the final cost exceeded 19.5 million yuan. One of the most important reasons for this was the excess over 450 million yuan in building the National Stadium over its original budget of 3,140 million.
